1. Start by draining the pool just below the skimmer line. This should be done with a submersible pump and can be done by a professional or by the homeowner.
  2. Clean the pool: Once the pool has been drained, it’s time to clean it. Clean all surfaces, vacuum the bottom, and brush the sides. Make sure to get rid of any debris that has collected.
  3. Balance the pool water: Check the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels before winterizing. If they’re not within the correct range, adjust them accordingly.
  4. Add winterizing chemicals: Add chlorine, algaecide, and other winterizing chemicals according to the instructions on the label. This helps prevent algae growth and other problems during the winter months.
  5. Clean and cover the equipment: Clean the filter, pump, and other equipment. Cover them with a tarp or pool cover to protect them from the elements.
  6. Shut off the water supply: Shut off the water supply to the pool equipment. This helps prevent damage from freezing.
  7. Disconnect the pump and filter: Disconnect the pump and filter from the pool. Pull any drain plugs and remove all lids. Do not forget to turn the power (breaker) supplying your pool equipment off.
